An American man who vaped for ten years and required a lung transplant had his life saved by a double-D breast implant.
Davey Bauer was given an artificial lung for two days while his heart was held in place by Northwestern Medicine surgeons in Chicago using the implants.
Mr. Bauer, a 34-year-old Missourian, has been vaping for almost ten years because he thought it was a better option than smoking.
In all honesty, I found vaping to be more addictive than cigarettes, even though it felt nicer and I believed it to be a healthier option.
He worked as a landscaper and seemed to be in good physical shape, engaging in active hobbies like snowboarding.
However, in April, he experienced dyspnea and was first diagnosed with flu; subsequently, he acquired an infection resistant to antibiotics. As his health deteriorated, medical professionals determined that a double lung transplant was his only hope of survival.
Before we could put him on the transplant list, he had to get rid of the infection, and removing both of his lungs was the only way to accomplish so.
Although this was unfamiliar ground for us, our group realised that nobody else could assist Davey if we couldn’t.
His natural lungs were removed, and in order to help with blood flow, surgeons developed a prosthetic lung. But keeping his heart from bursting inside his chest was the difficult part.
Ankit Bharat, the chief director of the Canning Thoracic Institute, stated that breast implants were the solution.
We selected a few possibilities, some of which were simpler than others to mould inside Davey’s chest, with the DD option being the best fit, he said. One of our plastic doctors was very kind to give us a quick course on the various types, styles, and sizes of breast implants.
Though our team is renowned for taking on the most challenging situations and thinking outside the box to save lives, I never would have thought that we would be employing DD breast implants to assist bridge a patient to lung transplantation.
Before the new lungs were transplanted, the implants were left in place for two days. Up until the end of September, Mr. Davey was kept in critical care.
I still find it hard to believe Davey survived without lungs. Without lungs, he was breathing and pumping blood, according to Susan Gore, Mr. Davey’s girlfriend. I would inhale and say, “One breath for me and one for Davey,” as we waited inside his Northwestern hospital room.
It’s difficult for me to comprehend, and I’m still amazed at Davey’s strength in being able to accomplish this.
The treatment, according to Dr. Bharat, was revolutionary because it demonstrated that patients could be maintained alive even after having their lungs removed.
Regarding Mr. Bauer, he found amusement in having breast implants placed.
