Northwest Florida schools continue to be plagued by teen vaping.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaping is the most popular way for children in the nation to get nicotine. These days, vaping is not only a health issue but also a classroom concern.
According to the Escambia County School District, approximately 180 students were disciplined for vaping during the first 10 weeks of classes this year. Nearly 700 children were caught vaping during the 2023–2024 school year, according to ECSD.
Few pupils, I believe, are aware of how it affects your health. They just don’t realise it’s bad for you, and I believe that’s a major contributing factor. Some people are aware. Another issue is that they simply don’t think it’s that essential.
According to Jones, practically all vaping takes place in restrooms.
Compared to only nicotine vapes, we have noticed a rise in THC vapes this year,” Hale continued. “Those students may be removed to an alternative program and face an automatic ten-day suspension.”
If a lab finds that a student’s on-campus vape tested positive for THC components, they may be arrested if the devices are seized.
Hale said that vaping with nicotine carries an automatic three-day in-school suspension. Additionally, students receive a civil citation that imposes a $25 fine or community service requirement.
Because they’re thinking, ‘I didn’t realise it could be this terrible,’ we frequently witness a lot of grief and tears.
In 2024, 8% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes, according to the CDC.
More than 25% of Escambia County high school students reported at least attempting a vape in 2022, according to the Florida Department of Health. That percentage increases to 30% in Santa Rosa and to 34% in Okaloosa County.
We do not yet have 2024 numbers because FDOH distributes data every other year.
School administrators clarify that the issue isn’t limited to high school.
It appears to begin in the sixth or possibly fifth grade. Around this age, people are most likely introduced to vaping.
Sevilla works as a school resource officer at Santa Rosa County’s Woodlawn Beach Middle School. He launched “Escape the Vape,” an educational initiative, during his second year as an SRO.
They won’t use it if you prevent them from trying it. People often start because they are bored or because they know someone who does it. Their initial access to it comes from someone in their family doing it. Nicotine is an extremely potent and strong drug once it gets a person hooked.
During the presentation, he informs the kids about the long-term effects and addictive nature of vaping.
According to Sevilla, if you can stop it at its source, it won’t spread out. I am aware that occasionally, folks who vape excessively have their lungs collapse.
Furthermore, vaping can affect more than simply physical health, according to USA Health paediatrics chair Dr. Gul Dadlani.
According to him, it can also result in hormone imbalances in our central nervous system, impulsive behaviour, and mood-related diseases. In terms of lung-related ailments, short-term effects can be substantial. Upon examining the chemicals used in many vapes, it is possible that they may directly irritate, inflame, or harm the lung tissue.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, prolonged nicotine vaping can promote nicotine addiction as well as make other substances like cocaine and methamphetamine more appealing to a teen’s developing brain because nicotine alters the development of the brain’s reward system.
You are consuming metals, cyanide, and formaldehyde in that beverage.
Hale gave instances of vapes that have been disguised by firms to resemble vehicle fobs, flash drives, and highlighters.
“There are more than 15,000 distinct flavours when you look,” Dr. Dadlani stated. to make them dependent on it and maintain that dependence as they develop.
In 2023, Okaloosa County schools placed more than 200 vape sensors in an effort to limit the problem’s growth. All middle and high school restrooms have these. The renovation was quite expensive—more than $175,000.
According to Superintendent Marcus Chambers, it has proven successful.
Hale expressed her desire to see sensors back at Booker T. Washington. She hopes that in the meanwhile, peer support, publicity, and anonymous reporting will contribute to change.
Kids quit vaping. Set down the vapes. The vapes are not going to save your life; they are disgusting. Put the books up and put down the vapes.
Thankfully, CDC data that was just made public indicates that a half million fewer teenagers reported using e-cigarettes today than they did the previous year. Additionally, according to their survey, cigarette smoking has now decreased to its lowest level ever. In 2024, just 1.4% of pupils report using it.
