As more teenagers take up vaping, UAE experts warn that it may cause brain harm.
Nicotine harms adolescents’ developing brains.
Dr. Azeem Abdul Mohamed, an internal medicine specialist at Abu Dhabi’s Bareen Hospital, stated that vaping or smoking e-cigarettes is associated with problems with the heart, lungs, brain, and gums. The biggest risk of consuming nicotine through e-cigarettes is lung damage.
“Vape oils may contain substances like nickel, tin, lead, flavourings, and other ultra-fine particles that might damage the lungs. The person may have trouble breathing or exhibit severe coughing, chest pain, exhaustion, vomiting, nausea, or even fever from overuse.
The doctor said, “In more severe circumstances, an individual may be hospitalised.”
The extremely addictive drug nicotine can damage adolescent brain development.
E-cigarettes are dangerous for children, teenagers, and young adults, according to Dr. Muhammad.
“Nicotine consumption in young people can have detrimental, long-lasting impacts on brain development, “added he. “Beginning vaping increases a teen’s likelihood of starting to smoke cigarettes. Due to the chemical and heat, vaping can result in vaping-associated lung damage, which is well-documented.
Since the brain doesn’t fully develop until a person is 20 to 25 years old, nicotine can affect cognitive behaviour and brain development in young people. Youth who are addicted to vaping will have negative impacts on their brain development.
Dr. Mohamed echoed him when he added, “Nicotine is addictive, and once a person becomes dependent on it, it becomes tough to cease.”
“Compared to smoking a regular cigarette, vaping can take up a lot more time. More nicotine and other substances that are bad for the lungs are in vaping. According to him, vaping damages the brain since the devices that produce the vapour contain lead, which might result in brain damage.
doctors worried about kids’ popularity of vaping
“Many people are switching from smoking cigarettes to vaping or e-cigarettes in the belief that doing so will protect them from the negative effects of smoking. However, the majority of e-cigarettes include nicotine, which might be especially bad for kids and teenagers, according to Dr. Mohamed.
Many governments have proposed outright vaping bans due to worries about the long-term repercussions of the practise.
Due to their rising popularity and negative health impacts, the European Commission suggested last week to outlaw the use of flavoured tobacco vaping devices in Europe, while the US Food and Drug Administration temporarily banned Juul Labs’ vaping products.
Vapes and e-cigarettes appear to be “the favoured tobacco [alternative] product of today’s young generation,” according to Dr. Muhammed.
According to him, these goods are frequently promoted to kids and teenagers using deceptive product claims and enticing flavours. Many people have the misunderstanding that electronic cigarettes either don’t contain nicotine or may be used to stop smoking.
The physicians cautioned that the rise in teen vape or e-cigarette smokers was extremely worrying and might result in some unanticipated health issues in the future.
Another reason why young people start smoking e-cigarettes is the erroneous notion that vaping is cool or secure. Dr. Muhammed continued, “While these items can initially appear less dangerous than conventional tobacco products, they ultimately lay the way for future smoking.
