During the Great American Smokeout on November 16, a student-organized anti-vaping event called #QUITTHESTICK was held.
With over 2.1 million youth and around one-third of college students presently smoking e-cigarettes, marketing students at West Chester University are furious that vaping is sweeping the country (National Youth Tobacco Survey, 2023 and Respiratory Care, 2023). As part of the WESCON Student Marketing Club, the marketing students have united to support their college peers in publicly committing to #QuitTheStick at an exciting event that will coincide with the annual Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 16, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Academic Quad, which is situated in West Cheste between University Avenue and West Rosedale Avenue.
Tom Elmer, an adjunct marketing professor at West Chester University, stated that the main goal of this event is to persuade students to give up “the stick.” The WESCON Student Marketing Club members observe that the use of nicotine is alarmingly rising among college- and high school-aged students. Our marketing students can delve deeply and truly assist their peers through this experiential learning opportunity, which is why we want it to end. The marketing students hope to change the lives of e-cigarette users who must give up for a variety of long-term health concerns.
Experiential learning is a major feature of the marketing curriculum at the University’s College of Business and Public Management. “We want our students to be trained and prepared to work on digital marketing issues/solutions for small businesses and nonprofits in the area by immersing them in helping to solve real challenges,” Elmer continued.
